The Dominican Friars of the Province of Assumption, gathered for their thirteen elective chapter at the John XXIII College, Canberra, re-elected on the sixth of July 2004 Fr Tom Cassidy as Prior Provincial. Confirmed in the office by the Most Reverend Carlos Aspiroz Costa, Master of the Order of Preachers, Fr Cassidy will take charge of the Province, whose works cover Australia, New Zealand, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea, for four years. Fr Cassidy was born in 1941 in Camberwell Victoria, educated by the Jesuits at St. Patrick’s East Melbourne, and entered the Dominican Order. He completed theological studies at the Dominican House of Studies at Blackfriars, Canberra and was ordained a priest in St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Melbourne in 1966. He completed his Lectorate in Sacred Theology in 1968 and his Doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Angelicum University in Rome in 1984. From 1968 to 1978 Fr Cassidy taught at Blackfriars Priory School, Adelaide SA and in 1976 was elected Prior of the Community attached to the School. From 1979 to 1988 he was Director of Formation at the Dominican House of Studies in Melbourne. From 1984-88 he also lectured in Preaching and Moral Theology and Grace at the Yarra Theological Union in Melbourne. In 1989 he was elected Regional Prior of the Dominican Friars in New Zealand and appointed parish priest of St Benedict’s Church, Auckland and was a lecturer at the Catholic Institute of Theology, Auckland. He was National Director of Catholic Communications in New Zealand, from 1992 to 1995 and parish priest of St. Andrew’s, Newlands, Wellington from 1994 to 1995. From 1996-99 Fr Cassidy was chaplain to Monash University, Melbourne and during that time he also lectured in Moral Theology at the United Faculty of Theology, Parkville and was a member of the Human Research and Ethics Committee at Dandenong Hospital and for the ACU. In 1999 he was elected Prior of Blackfriars Priory, Watson and in 2000 Prior Provincial for his first term. |
